Faculty
All New Horizons' full-time, professional staff members are degreed and certified by the NC Department of Public Instruction. Many hold advanced degrees, and continue to enrich their professional credentials. The teachers are skilled in the liberal arts and in classroom management. Each faculty member recognizes that education is a responsibility shared by parents, teachers, and students and provides frequent feedback.
Full-time New Horizons faculty members administer the day-to-day operations of the school jointly, establishing procedures and structures to facilitate the efficient working of the institution. Additionally, these staff members provide valuable input to the Board of Directors and implement broad policy established by the Board. Full-time faculty members are voting members of New Horizons Elementary School, Inc.
Faculty Members
Jane Winters, Kindergarten
Ms. Jane received her Bachelor of Arts degree from UNC-W. She has been teaching for more than 20 years – 24 of which have been at New Horizons. She is one of the Founding Teachers of New Horizons Elementary School, which began in 1983.
Brenda Walkup, First Grade
Ms. Brenda is a graduate from Texas A&M University with a BIS in elementary education and bilingual certification... She taught school for 8 years in Zapata County, Texas Independent School District and received the “Teacher of the Year” award in 2000. This is Ms. Brenda’s seventh year at New Horizons.
Sally Gustie, Second Grade
Ms. Sally received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from Plattsburg State University, New York. She has been teaching for 20 years. This is Ms. Sally’s first year at New Horizons.
Ellen Parker, Third Grade
Ms. Ellen received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from UNC-W, graduating Suma cum Laude. She also earned her Masters Degrees from UNC-W in educational administration and supervision. She has been teaching for over 26 years in New Hanover County public and private schools. She is also one of the Founding Teachers of New Horizons Elementary School.
Donna Clark, Fourth Grade
Ms. Donna received her Bachelor’s Degrees in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from Rowan University. She received her Masters Degree from Florida State University in Instructional Systems. She has been teaching for over 15 years. This is Ms. Donna’s fourth year at New Horizons.
Anetta Benedict, Fifth Grade
Ms. Annetta earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and English from the University of Vermont. After graduation, Annetta became one of the founding teachers at the San Diego Cooperative Charter School. This is Ms. Annetta’s second year at New Horizons.
Jill Caldwell, Physical Education
Ms. Jill received her Bachelor of Arts degree from UNC-CH. She taught for 8 years in the Duplin County Schools and has been at New Horizons for the last eight years.
