Welcome to New Horizons Elementary School

The Nature of the Scholarship Program
To the extent that funding is available, need-based scholarships are awarded to enable qualified students to enter and/or remain at New Horizons Elementary School when their families are unable to pay the full costs of education. Both currently enrolled and new applicants are eligible for financial aid. Each scholarship pays for a percentage of a student's tuition and fees for a school year on a sliding scale basis depending upon the family's ability to contribute toward expenses. There is no requirement that scholarship money be repaid by the recipient or the recipient's family.

Applying for Financial Aid
Admission to New Horizons is made without regard to potential financial need. Students are assessed by the Enrollment Committee solely on non-economic criteria.

Once a family has applied for a child's admission to the school and has been approved by the Enrollment Committee through the normal admissions process, they can apply for financial aid. New Horizons is a member of the School and Student Service for Financial Aid (SSS), which assists independent schools in making financial aid decisions. The Financial Aid Committee of New Horizons Elementary School makes all financial aid decisions based upon SSS recommendations. The Committee is made up of the Treasurer, a classroom teacher, and a parent from the membership. General scholarship funds are offered without regard to race, religion, or ethnic origin.

Parents interested in applying for financial aid should contact the school's office manager to receive the appropriate form and information. New Horizons requires that families file a Parents Financial Statement (PFS) and that this form with its minimum processing fee be returned to the school within ten (10) days of being notified of acceptance into a class. The school will then mail the form and fee to SSS in Princeton, NJ. Families are responsible for payment of the processing fee and should make checks payable to School and Student Service for Financial Aid. SSS analyzes the financial statement and recommends an amount that the family should be able to afford for educational expenses. SSS does not make financial aid awards, nor does it provide the funds for financial aid awards.

All information regarding scholarships is held in strict confidence. Members of the Financial Aid Committee receive a summary of financial need as determined by the School and Student Service for Financial Aid. The names of applicants and recipients are not shared outside this committee. Recipients and their families are also expected to maintain confidentiality.

Awarding Scholarship Funds
School and Student Service for Financial Aid sends its recommendation and a copy of the family's financial statement back to the school. Within the limitations of New Horizon's budget, the Financial Aid Committee uses the SSS recommendation as a guideline in determining the financial aid to be offered to a family. Scholarships are made for one year only. Families must apply annually for financial assistance.

Every effort is made to meet the financial needs of newly enrolling students. However, because requests for aid may exceed the funds available, it is important to apply as early as possible after being notified of acceptance for enrollment. Returning students who are currently receiving financial aid, newly enrolling siblings of such students, and currently enrolled students whose economic circumstances significantly change are given precedence over new applicants.

Criteria For Granting Aid

Need - The family must demonstrate financial need based on the information provided on the SSS form.

Academics - The student must possess average academic abilities or better. For incoming students, the Enrollment Committee must indicate that the applicant has potential for academic success.

Other - The Financial Aid Committee also considers family participation and interest and the student's willingness to participate and benefit from the program.
