First Grade

First graders build on their kindergarten achievements by continuing to focus on reading, writing and mathematics using a variety of resources and techniques to further their development in these areas. Reading instruction includes the use of basal readers, children’s literature, poems, trade books, fables, fairy tales and news magazines. The use of phonics, comprehension strategies, vocabulary development and word recognition skills helps the first graders progress as readers, writers and speakers.

The Everyday Mathematics program continues to place emphasis on conceptual understanding while developing basic skills. First graders focus on developing a real understanding of addition and subtraction, preparing them for more critical thinking and word problem relationships in second grade.

Geography, history and sociology are the components of first grade social studies. The study of maps, time lines and different cultures broaden the scope of the first grader’s world.

As with kindergarten, children in first grade focus on science throughout the year. The science modules used require about 10 weeks of hands-on experiments giving children the opportunity to continue in their learning and application of the scientific method.
