Fourth Grade

Through the fourth grade language program, students become better communicators both orally and in their writing. Fourth graders use the writing process to produce narratives, descriptions, persuasions, letters and poems. The reading and writing programs are heavily integrated. Revision, proofreading and editing continue to be major areas of focus.

The Everyday Mathematics curriculum uses numeration, operations and computation, patterns, functions, algebra, geometry, measurement and data analysis in the fourth grade. Students also complete Arithmetic Drilled Daily (ADD) sheets that require them to recall previously covered skills and concepts to keep them sharp at solving number story problems.

Our fourth grade social studies program is textbook-based and centers on states and regions in the United States. The emphasis is on the impact of geography and the development of our country.

As with the other grades at New Horizons, students receive instruction in physical education, healthy living, Spanish and the creative arts. The use of computers is broadened as students begin using the Internet for research and computers for report writing.
