Kindergarten
In Kindergarten, students are very busy with reading, writing, language development, mathematics, science, social studies and art. Pre-reading and reading activities use a variety of materials that include but are not limited to basal readers, trade books, children’s literature and poetry. Techniques used include practice with sight words, phonics instruction, sign language and whole language skills.
Students will have many opportunities to participate in creative writing by writing in journals, pairing with partners from other grades on writing exercises and composing letters to schoolmates. We will also use “circle time” to show and tell our work therefore adding to the student’s language development.
Everyday Mathematics is a program that emphasizes conceptual understanding while building a mastery of basic skills. The curriculum explores the full mathematics spectrum, not just basic arithmetic and focuses on how children learn, what they’re interested in and the future for which they need to prepare.
Science and Social Studies are also a part of the Kindergarten curriculum. Hands-on science activities that teach children the scientific method are used. Social Studies are tied to our goal of expanding the immediate world of a kindergartener by introducing him or her to other cultures and divergent family customs.
Our regular use of art as a means of expression as well as entertainment is tied to all aspects of the kindergarten core curriculum.
