Second Grade

Second grade is a time when students become confident readers, able to read long chapter books and to sustain reading for longer periods of time. Children begin to write longer stories with involved plots and are encouraged to use descriptive language and dialogue. Students continue to journal and to use more advanced readers in the classroom. Punctuation, proofreading and grammar become a focus as well.

Math studies involve open-ended activities that allow the student to succeed at their current skill level and beyond. Continuing with Everyday Mathematics, students practice their basic math facts, work on computation, and practice mental calculations. Instruction includes use of math games as a partial substitution for the traditional drills and math worksheets.

In addition to reading and math, students continue with their social studies and science while adding a beginning understanding of “technology” to their skills. At this level, students begin learning to keyboard using the Alpha Smart keyboard system. Second graders receive 45 minutes per week of Spanish instruction as well as direction in the creative arts, music and physical education.
